Shaniwar Teli News Letters
The Shaniwar Teli e‑Newsletter celebrates the unique history of the Bene‑Israel community from India’s Konkan coast. According to tradition, their ancestors—members of the Tribe of Levi—arrived in India after a shipwreck in 175 BCE. Over time, they became known as Shaniwar Teli, or “oil‑pressers who do not work on Saturday,” a name reflecting both their ancient role in producing oil for Jewish ritual use and their continued observance of the Sabbath. This identity helped reconnect them with the global Jewish world after more than a millennium. Today, our newsletter shares their story, heritage, and ongoing contributions with readers around the globe.
